KP San Jose is a 225 bed hospital staffing over 300 Volunteers. Our Senior Volunteer Program is open to those over the age of 18. Volunteer services are centered towards customer service and hospitality, complimenting the quality of care provided by the staff. Volunteers are asked for a commitment of at least six months (100 hours) volunteering three to four hours a week. Opportunities are available days, evenings, and weekends.
Junior Volunteers
Our Junior Volunteer Program is open to students at least 14 years of age and in the 9th through 12th grades. Volunteers must commit to one shift weekly for a period of one year. Due to the popularity of our Junior Program, availability is limited and there may be a waiting period as long as approximately six months. Volunteers are recruited on an as needed basis.
Services available are Patient Services, Information Desk, and Gift Shop.

Why Volunteer?
Volunteers contribute to the quality of services at our medical facilities, just as the work they do adds to the quality of their own lives. Volunteering is an opportunity to:
- Provide community service
- Gain experience in a health care setting
- Acquire new skills
- Make new friends

How to Become a Volunteer:
- Complete the Senior Volunteer Application (MS Word Document) and either U.S. mail or fax it to 408 972-6211. You will be contacted for an interview appointment.
- Or phone 408 972-6233 and an interview will be arranged, at which time you may bring the completed application with you.
- All volunteers over the age of 18 will be subjected to a background check.
- Once accepted, you will be required to complete a health screening and attend an Orientation
- You will then be placed in a service area according to interest, needs, and availability
- Training will be provided by veteran Volunteers and/or Staff
Steps to becoming a Junior Volunteer:
- Complete the Junior Volunteer Application (MS Word Document) and return it, along with two letters of recommendation, to the Volunteer Office
- Once you are notified, an interview will be arranged
- Upon accepted, you will be required to complete a health screening and attend an Orientation
- Training will be provided by veteran Volunteers and/or Staff
Health Screenings:
Before volunteering you will be required to complete the following health clearance:
2 step TB
· If positive testing, a chest xray may be ordered
Titre for Rubella, Rubeola, Mumps, and Varicella
· If non-immune, a vaccine will be administered
We offer the Hepatitis B series as a courtesy, but it is not mandatory. You will be required to get an annual TB clearance. The above tests are offered free of charge to you through our Employee Health Department.
Orientation:
Prior to volunteering, you will be asked to attend a three-hour orientation. Information on the following topics will be discussed:

- Emergency Preparedness
- Workers' Compensation
- Customer Service
- Sexual Harassment
- Wheelchair Skills
- General Volunteer Dept.
Annual Inservice - All volunteers are required to attend an inservice yearly on the above topics.
