Health Education Class Description

The Health Education Department offers classes and support groups for members and nonmembers with various physical and/or psychological symptoms. All classes are held at Kaiser Permanente facility locations and require pre-registration. Some classes are supported by your health plan dues and some are not, so fees vary from class to class. Please check the class listings or contact the Health Education Department for information.

Class Name Description
ADHD Home Management Skills for Parents An introduction to resources, positive parenting, building self-esteem, rewards and consequences, family relationships, and parent support resources.
ADHD Overview for Parents This 2 1/2 hour evening class will address Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder in children.
ADHD School Management Skills for Parents An introduction to helping your child succeed at school, homework supports, teacher/educator comminications, parent's rights, and using community resources.
Advanced Health Care Directive (single session) An Advance Health Care Directive allows you to have your health care wishes honored if you become too ill to communicate them. This class will help explain what an advance directive is, why it's important for all patients to have, and how to fill out the forms. The instructors for this class--a physician and a clinical health educator--will answer any questions you may have.
Anger Managment About anger and managing your responses to it. N/A for domestic violence referrals.
Anxiety Management In depth study of anxiety and fear; triggers and anxiety-reduction techniques.
Anxiety Overview (single session) Overwhelmed by anxious feelings? In this class, learn about causes, symptoms and treatments for anxiety. Find out what you can do to manage your anxiety and fully enjoy your life.
Assertiveness Skills Learn skills to increase your self-esteem and improve communication. Find out how to say what you mean and mean what you say.
Cancer & Stress Management: A Mind Body Medicine Approach If you are either newly diagnosed with cancer or in various stages of remission, and you are making the life long adjustment to this new and unexpected part of your identitiy, this 15 hr., six session class may help.
Cholesterol and Lifestyle (single session) Want to lower your cholesterol, but don't know where to begin? This class helps you understand how exercise and a heart-healthy diet can lower your cholesterol, improve your overall health, and reduce your risk for heart attacks and strokes. The instructor is a registered dietitian.
Couples Communication Communication skills for committed couples.
Depression Management Skills (multi-session) This is an 6-week class. Depression is more than just moodiness or occasional sadness. Many people struggle with it on a daily basis. Learn to recognize the signs of drepression, practice simple relaxation techniques, and develop your own self-management plan.
Depression Overview (single session) The Depression Overview is a one-session structured class that provides general information about depression, treatment options & services available. The class provides triage to appropriate follow-up services such as individual or group appointments in Adult Psychiatry or Behavioral Health Education classes.
Essential Communication Skills This series explores the "essentials" of effective communicationin order to improve your interactions with others and to reduce conflict. It offers you skills that work when practiced.
Forgiveness And Health The simple but effective techniques you learn in the "Practicing Forgiveness and Health" class will guide you to begin to release the burden of unwanted hurts, daily resentments and old grievances and to open yourself to the increased happiness and peacefulness in the present. You will gain the understanding that forgiveness does not mean denying or forgetting your experience, excusing others' behavior or reconciling - but is, in fact, a gift to yourself for your own healing.
Foundations: Managing Your Weight (single session) Successful weight loss requires more than just cutting calories. Learn how making healthy lifestyle choices, including regular exercise, proper nutrition, and a positive attitude, can help you lose weight and keep it off.
Freedom from tobacco series (multi-session) This is a 7-week class. Declare your freedom and join our tobacco cessation program. Learn about the nature of nictine addiction, how to develop a personal quit plan, and how to deal with withdrawl. Participation in this program qualifies member wit supplemental drug coverage to receive tobacco cessation medications at co-pay. This class is open to the general public.
Healthier Living with Ongoing Health Conditions (multi-session) This is a 6-week class. Living with an ongoing health condition such as diabetes or arthritis doesn't mean you have to be ruled by it. Learn to manage your symptoms, fight fatigue and frustration, make daily tasks easier, and get on with your life.
Joy of Health (single session) This class if for people who currently have high blood pressure, high cholesterol, or pre-diabetes. Learn how to help reduce your risk of developing diabetes or heart disease. Topics include healthy eating, physical activity, stress management, and weight management. The instructor is a health educator.
Kids Nutrition (single session) This two-hour session for parents and children covers the role of obesity as a risk factor in many diseases. We'll discuss ways to make healthy food choices, the importance of exercise to maintain a healthy weight, and planning a realistic change that you and your child can work towards after the class. The class is taught in English only. The instructor is a registered dietitian.
Living Well With Fibromyalgia Social Support Series w/stress reduction techniques, information sharing, community resources, positive, solution-oriented discussions.

Pathways for Stress Reduction (single session) Join this class to discover how your body, mind, and symptoms are connected. We'll help you identify the stresses in your life and learn basic coping skills. This class also provides an overview of available mind-body classes so you can choose the one(s) that are best for you.
PHASE (single session) Learn how to Prevent Heart Attacks and Strokes Everyday (PHASE) through healthy lifestyles and managing your medications. This class is for anyone who has diabetes, coronary artery disease, chronic kidney disease, or has ever had a strokeor TIA. Topics includ the ABCs of PHASE, medications, healthy eating, physical activity, weight management, next steps, and resources. The instructor is a clinical health educator.
Post Partum Stress Overview This single session class reviews pregnancy myths, childbirth, nursing and provides self-care tips.
Postpartum Depression Series Monday's, on-going, weekley 2:00 - 3:30. Contact the series leader, Dr. Tracy Chapman, (408) 972-3234 for reservations. In this ongoing weekly series, you'll learn about depression and anciety in the postpartum period. You can identify and change your thinking patterns in order to improve our mood and your behavior. You'll learn cping skills, positive self-talk, and relaxation methods, and you'll have time to share with other who are feeling the same way.
Quit Tobacco Workshop (single session) This one-session workshop is designed to help you develop your own quit plan. In a positive, no-pressure environment, learn about the nature of addiction, available resources, and strategies to prevent relapse. Participation in this program qualifies members with supplemental drug coverage to receive tobacco cessation medications at co-pay. This class is open to the general public.
Relationship Skills, A Class for Individuals This course will explore what relationships are realy all about and provides tools to deal with them more effectively.
Spanish Stress Overview Join this class to discover how your body, mind, and symptoms are connected. We'll help you identify the stresses in your life and learn basic coping skills. This class also provides an overview of available mind-body classes so you can choose the one(s) that are best for you.
Stress Mgmt: Mind Body Medicine (multi-session) This is an 6-week class. Medical science has made amazing discoveries about how our emotions and thoughts affect our health. In this class you'll learn about the sources of stress in your life and techniques to help you manage them.
Understanding Mental Illness: Overview for Families (single session) This single-session class provides a brief overview of mental illness, mental health, and the resources available in the community to support concerned caregivers. This is an opportunity for famlies and caregivers to ask questions and get support. Guest speakers from the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) will make presentations in our mutual effort to link families to this educational resource.

If you have an emergency medical condition, call 911 or go to the nearest hospital. When you have an emergency medical condition, we cover emergency care from Plan providers and non-Plan providers anywhere in the world.

An emergency medical condition is (1) a medical or psychiatric condition that manifests itself by acute symptoms of sufficient severity (including severe pain) such that you could reasonably expect the absence of immediate medical attention to result in serious jeopardy to your health or serious impairment or dysfunction of your bodily functions or organs; or (2) when you are in active labor and there isn't enough time for safe transfer to a Plan hospital before delivery, or if transfer poses a threat to your or your unborn child's health and safety.
